18th Biennial Conference of IAFLL – save the date
Dear IAFLL Members
Dear Friends,

I am delighted to formally announce that the 18th Biennial Conference of the International Association for Forensic and Legal Linguistics (IAFLL 2027) will be held in Porto, Portugal, from 12 to 16 July 2027. It will be hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto.

The theme for this edition — Disruptive Scenarios, Epistemological Challenges, Improved Scientific Standards — invites us to reflect critically and creatively on how forensic linguistics can rise to the demands of an increasingly complex world.

Following in the scholarly footsteps of our previous gatherings —  IAFL Porto 2012: Bridging the Gaps between Language and the Law; IAFL Porto 2017: New Challenges for Forensic Linguists; IAFLL Porto 2022: Rigour and Transparency in Forensic Linguistics — the 2027 edition promises to continue our Porto tradition of intellectual depth with a dash of Portuguese flair.

The conference will feature parallel, panel, and plenary sessions, with a call for papers to be announced soon. As usual, we’ll also have our pre-conference seminars and FL school, designed to foster knowledge exchange and capacity building.

The conference working languages are English, Portuguese, and (yes!) Spanish.

Beyond academia, expect a lively social programme, both during and after the conference — because forensic linguists know that some of the best ideas emerge over fine food, good music, and a glass of something local. That is, excellent, yet reasonably priced wine.

For those already thinking practically, registration fees will include discounted rates for IAFLL members, students, and delegates from Global South or lower-income countries.

To get you in the Porto spirit, enjoy a short teaser that captures the city’s beauty and (good!) energy:

We can’t wait to welcome you (back) to Porto — where bridges meet, ideas flow, and conversations linger long after the last session.

See you in Porto!
